What we did well
Removal of metal work & arthroscopy following ORIF left ankle
What we could have done differently
In April 2016 I suffered a trimalleolar fracture of my left ankle. I underwent open reduction/internal fixation and had several months of non weight-bearing walking with crutches. My follow-up appointment was with Mr Malik who has been absolutely FABULOUS and is my guardian angel. In July 2016 he suggested that I have the metal work removed, but I was very nervous about it and left it until February of this year (2017). I had been suffering with pain in my ankle and trochanteric bursitis, which was very painful. I had been on anti-inflammatories and pain killers since my accident in the April. On February 3rd Mr Malik removed all the metal work, cleared out scar tissue from my ankle and I've been pain free and off all medications ever since. It is now just over 3 weeks since the operation and I am now back to walking dogs all day, which is my business and which I almost lost last year. THANK YOU Mr Malik, you are AMAZING.

I had 8 weeks of physiotherapy before being referred to see Mr Malik. Following MRI scan and X-rays was diagnosed with Morton's Neuroma. He suggested I have one course of steroid injections under Ultra-sound.Since having the injections I have had no pain. I also need a joint fusion for big toe arthritis, he has given me the confidence to go ahead with this.

Ankle fusion for severe ankle arthritis
Mr Ahmad Malik made an instant and correct diagnosis of a problem that nobody else had managed to do during 5 years of intense pain and my inability to walk anything other than short distances. The procedure was carried out on 9th January 2015, after 7 weeks of 'rest' with my foot elevated I was once again able to walk without pain!! The post operative care and attention I received from Mr Malik was absolutely 1st class and have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending him to anybody requiring this type of surgery. Very many thanks for transforming my life.

Left Big Toe Cheilectomy and Right Hallux Valgus Correction
Absolutely Nothing, Amazing Consultant!
Mr Malik and his team did an amazing job. I would recommend Mr Malik to everyone as he is a very caring and kind consultant. I was terrified to go through with this surgery as it was my first operation, but Mr Malik and his team talked everything through with me and reassured me and the end result was worth it.

Everything very well explained - 1st MTP joint fusion for big toe arthritis
It was the phrase "but Mum, it's not going to get any better is it?" that spurred me on to seek medical advice about an increasingly painful big toe joint. I visited Mr Malik on recommendation and, after X-Rays and an MRI scan, he diagnosed severe arthritis in the 1st MTP joint which needed fusing. He explained in layman's terms what the operation and recuperation would entail, emphasising the need to follow his instructions to ensure a successful outcome.
The day surgery took place on 8th October 2016 and, as advised, I began pain relief immediately and experienced no pain at all (honestly!). By the following Thursday I was off all medication. Two weeks followed with my foot elevated above my heart at all times, barring bathroom breaks etc. It was really hard to be so inactive as you're not actually ill but stay focused to ensure a successful recovery. After removal of bandages, I was allowed out into the big wide world in a wheelchair which made a lot of difference. After another four weeks non weight bearing on crutches and X-Rays showed a successful joint fusion and I walked unaided from hospital.
So, what advice can I give? Firstly follow Mr Malik's instructions to the letter as he really does know better than you (and he'll know if you're cheating!). Secondly, find ways to make time pass; sort out your photographs, find a new hobby etc. Don't under-estimate your recovery period as it will take time to build up muscle strength and regain fitness after such prolong inactivity.
Finally a huge thank you to a very likeable Mr Malik, a talented surgeon who gave me the confidence to proceed with surgery.
